8th plague

Well, if you're the sort of horror fan who loves the scour the new release shelf every week, even when you KNOW there's not much there in the way of "buried treasure," then congrats: You're a horror fan just like me. Feel free to use the following article as a brief navigational map as you wander through the horrors of the first week of May.

The 8th Plague -- A woman visits a creepy campground in an effort to discover what happened to her missing sister. The back of the DVD case promises "relentless terror, gore, and bone-chilling thrills," so that's promising. But don't ALL horror movies promise those things?

Attack of the Giant Leeches -- There's no way this 1959 cheese-ball can live up to the campiness of its title ... is there?

From a Place of Darkness -- John Savage stars as an investigator who delves into the unpleasant world of snuff films, and (obviously since this is a horror film) lives to regret it. (Also starring Bronson Pinchot! Where's he been lately?)

End of the Line -- This fine Canadian chiller has been available (through Canadian outlets) for a little while now, but it finally hits U.S. DVD in official style this week. It's a nasty little tale of religious armageddon that's both creepy and clever.

House of the Demon -- A bunch of college kids spend time in a creepy old house, only to discover that, well, demons live there.

Mum & Dad -- A UK import that's been getting a good deal of attention on the festival circuit. It's about a young woman who accepts a ride home from a co-worker ... and lives to regret it after meeting her freaky family.

Scarce -- If you liked the recent import COLD PREY, then here's an American indie that seems to have the exact same plot: A bunch of young partiers take refuge in an isolated cabin, only to realize, yup, there's a slasher nearby.

Unconscious -- A man is found set ablaze behind a church, but that's not the strange part: A whole bunch of concerned individuals soon arrive at the hospital to "claim" the unidentified man for themselves.

Next week: All sorts of different stuff, including a big-budget prequel, a new sequel to an old grudge, a Bruce Campbell double feature, and a few interesting odds and ends.
